What is high blood pressure or hypertension?

Let us understand what this ‘blood pressure’ is and why it is needed. The mechanism of our body is such that oxygenated blood is needed for the tissues and organs to function. Our circulatory system does the work of delivering this blood.

The heart is a part of this system. The heartbeat creates a pressure that pushes blood into our blood vessels which include arteries, veins, and cells. This pressure is called blood pressure or blood pressure. And when this blood pressure rises more than necessary, we call it High Blood Pressure or Hypertension.

Blood Pressure Reading:

After checking the BP, two numbers are spoken to you, and then it is told that the BP is normal, increased or decreased.

For Example:-

  • BP is 120/80 … it is normal.
  • BP is 140/90 … increased.
  • BP is 90/60’… low.

Just Remember: The above mentioned BP readings are for a statically speaking. The actual Blood pressure depends on person to person.

In medical terms, 120/80 reads ‘120 over 80 Millimeters of Mercury’ and writes ‘120/80 mmHg’.

What is Systolic Blood Pressure or Diastolic Blood Pressure?

Systolic Blood Pressure: The first or upper number indicates the Systolic Blood Pressure, which means that the blood is applying pressure on the artery walls when the heart is beat.

Diastolic Blood Pressure: The second or lower number refers to the diastolic blood pressure, which means how much pressure is applied on the blood artery walls when the heart rests between two beats.

That is 120/80 mm Hg means that your systolic blood pressure is 120. Diastolic blood pressure is 80.

Which of these numbers matters more?

Usually the upper number i.e. Systolic Blood Pressure matters more because it gives the best idea of the risk of heart attack or stroke. After increasing the value of BP, we keep it in the category of hypertension.

Note: If BP falls below 90/60, then it is called Low Blood Pressure or Hypotension.

Causes of High blood pressure

The cause of hypertension is not known in more than 90% of cases, but there are many risk factors that can cause you to have high BP disease:

1) Older age: The risk of getting high BP increases with increasing age. However, now this disease is also found among the youth.

2) Family History: If someone in your family has high BP then chances of getting this disease also increases.

3) Temperature: In many cases, it has been found that BP remains low when the temperature is high and BP becomes high when the temperature is low. So if you live in low-temperature places then your BP may be higher. However, it is more common to happen after the age of 65.

4) Ethnic Background: In the case of hypertension, your ethnic background is also important. It has been found that people of African and South Asian ancestry have a higher risk of having high BP. South Asians, including Indians, are also at greater risk of the disease.

5) Obesity: Obesity itself is a problem and it brings with it many other diseases, one of them is the disease of high blood pressure. Overweight or obese people have a higher risk of hypertension than people with normal weight.

6) Gender (Male / Female): Generally men are more likely to complain of high BP than women. But after the age of 60, both the risk of getting hypertension is equal.

7) Physical inactivity: If you are not physically active, neither do you exercise, nor do you move or work or sit in one place all day, then you are at increased risk of high BP.

8) Smoking: Smoking increases the chances of getting cancer, but at the same time your blood vessels shrink because of which blood pressure increases. Due to smoking, the amount of oxygen in the blood also decreases, so to compensate it, the heart has to pump faster, which increases BP.

9) Alcohol: Some studies have found that systolic blood pressure is about 7 mmHg higher than those who do not drink alcohol regularly.
